At eCommerce Nurse, we’re always keeping an eye on the top search terms. For Q4 2020, we’ve decided to share some keyword trends we’ve spotted using our tools and systems. We hope this gives you a broader understanding of what’s happening on Amazon and helps our clients optimise content for seasonal patterns, growth, and potential niches. This roundup focuses on Amazon.com.
This week in keywords
There are some interesting trends in the top search terms as we wrap up October. “Toilet paper” has seen a drop out of the top 50. Hopefully people have stopped panic buying, and we can stop shaming our neighbours when they have multiple packets delivered.
Seasonal switch-up
You can tell we’re moving into changing weather, as some winter-related clothing searches have replaced swimsuits, fans, and inflatable pool toys. “Sweaters for women,” “boots for women,” and “leggings for women” are all in the top 100. There are not as many search terms related to men’s winter clothing, but maybe women are just better prepared or like to shop more, we’ll let you decide.
Customers have started to embrace the seasonal changes. Searches for Christmas holiday items are gradually filling in. “Christmas decoration clearance,” sits just outside the top 10, proving that it’s never too early to prepare for Christmas!
“Harry Potter” has made a comeback in the top 30 search terms. Vendors and sellers are still maxing their sales on this topic, with lots of merchandise available to accompany the books. This seems to be a perennial Q4 seller in all categories.
Amazon is going to the dogs
There are quite a few dog-related terms in the top 200 list, at the moment, including: “dog bed,” “dog toys,” and others. Perhaps people are treating their dogs following the puppy boom, which happened during Covid-19 lockdown.
This is Halloween
It appears that Covid-19 can neither cancel Halloween nor dampen people’s spirits… with the majority of the top 100 terms this week related to Halloween. It appears people will still be celebrating Halloween one way or another, shopping for “Halloween decorations,” “Halloween costumes for women,” “Halloween candy” and “Halloween movies” all ranking highly enough to get clicks and treats.
Pandemic products
It’s still 2020, of course, and customers are still being savvy about health and wellness. This category continues to score on searches for “N95 masks,” “disinfectant spray,” “face shields” and even “yoga mats” all in the top 200.
