What’s the best way to stand out among hundreds of thousands of products on Amazon? The coveted best-seller badge. It gives customers a quick way to see what’s popular in the category they’re shopping, browsing, or searching in. As sellers, having a product classified as a best seller can ensure your long-term success on Amazon. Ready to learn more about what this badge is and how to get it? This blog is a great starting place.

The best seller badge

According to Amazon, the definition of a best seller is pretty straightforward: “Our most popular products based on sales.” Every category on Amazon, from a top-level browse node such as Pet Care to a more granular category, such as Dog Treats has a list of top-selling products underneath it.

Ranking #1 in a particular category or subcategory means that item has sold more than any other in that marketplace as of the most recent update. This item is then granted a best seller badge, which displays in search and browse.

Wondering where your products rank in your category? It’s easy to find where a product ranks on any detail page. Simply scroll down to the item info and see your ranking in all the relevant categories.

How often is the best seller ranking updated on Amazon?

Amazon updates the best sellers “hourly.” This designation allows products on the site to receive prominent placement on category pages, detail pages, in navigation, and more. That means every hour of every day, on every Amazon site, this badge is up for grabs by sellers competing in any category.

The difference between Amazon's Choice and best seller badge

The best seller badge is only awarded based on sales data. The Amazon's Choice designation is based on a combination of factors, such as sales velocity, keyword ranking, availability, pricing, product reviews, and other factors.

As nothing can affect your chances, other than sales, there isn’t a way to ensure you are the best seller for your category. You can run aggressive Amazon Advertising or create a large discounting promotion or coupon/voucher to boost sales, but results will fluctuate and nothing is going to permanently keep you in a certain ranking position.

How to get the best seller badge on Amazon

What you can do is play Amazon’s game properly to create strong, sustained sales. As a full-service agency specialising in Amazon, we have a range of services to help with this. We recommend you work on everything that can affect your retail readiness. This includes:

Listing optimisation

Updating and optimising your listings with an SEO-based approach will ensure your listings rank higher organically, and thus, sell more.

Classify your products correctly

Classifying your items in the correct browse nodes will ensure you have the best chance of success. It’s important to list your items correctly, and as deeply as possible in the browse tree. For example, if you sell dog food pouches, you should list them in the Dog Food Pouches category and not just in Pet Supplies. Obviously, Pet Supplies will be a much larger and more competitive category, which will be harder to achieve best seller status in.

Best selling categories

Along with this, it’s important to not be disingenuous. Don’t list your item in an erroneous category just because it’s small and less competitive. This may temporarily boost your sales but will hurt you in the long run. Black hat tricks are never a good idea.

Focus on advertising

Advertising can increase your sales and create a pool of loyal customers. Using Sponsored Products or Sponsored Brands, especially leading them to your Brand Store, can drive customers to your brand and all of your products. You can then target these customers with Amazon Posts and other programs, and ask them to leave reviews. Increasing your reviews will also encourage other customers to purchase your products, converting browsers into buyers and boosting your ranking.

Conclusion and more help

Simple tasks, like listing optimisation and a well-managed account will increase your conversion, customer loyalty, and overall ranking. Once your sales are achieving a steady sales ranking, you have a shot at taking over the number one spot and being granted the Best Sellers badge.
